Casey's story

How did you find out about the internship at Healthwatch Tower Hamlets?

I discovered the internship at Healthwatch Tower Hamlets through my university's Internship services portal, which regularly updates students on available opportunities aligned with their field of study and interests. Based on my major (psychology) and a passion for social well-being, I said that my preferred job would be one that makes a positive impact on the well-being of individuals and communities.

What kind of things did you learn during your internship?

During my internship, I learned various skills such as interpersonal engagement, survey administration, and data input/analysis. Additionally, I gained insights into the operations of international health and social care services and the importance of patient-centered approaches. Also, I learned soft skills such as adaptability and how to work with other team members in a cooperative way.

Did the internship improve your learning/confidence or knowledge in a specific area?

The internship significantly boosted my confidence in interacting with individuals whom I do not know. I was intimidated to interview patients at hospitals because I did not think they would be approachable and willing to partake in patient experience surveys. But I found a lot of people are happy to contribute their voice and appreciate what Healthwatch Tower Hamlets does as an organization. It also deepened my understanding of health and social care issues, particularly in terms of patient perspectives and the wide range of factors involved in a good healthcare system.

What did you enjoy the most about the internship?

The most enjoyable aspect of the internship was engaging with community members and hearing their stories and concerns. It felt good to know my role was to make the voices of people heard who probably never get a chance to share their thoughts in such an intimate way. It was rewarding to contribute to initiatives aimed at improving healthcare access and quality for residents of Tower Hamlets.

Has working with Healthwatch changed how you view health and social care services?

Working with Healthwatch Tower Hamlets has indeed shifted my perspective on health and social care services. It highlighted the importance of community involvement, advocacy, and patient empowerment in addressing healthcare disparities and driving positive change. This experience has reinforced my commitment to promoting equitable and patient-centered healthcare practices.
